A 37-year-old Corpus Christi motorcycle gang member was sentenced for federal charges.
Billy Boortz, a member of the Homietos outlaw motorcycle gang and former Mexican Mafia gang member, pleaded guilty to unlawful ammunition possession on July 24, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office.
U.S. District Judge David Morales sentenced Boortz to nine years in prison followed by three years of supervised release, the release states.
"At the hearing, the court heard additional evidence that Boortz intentionally tried to murder the victim in this case," the release reads. "In handing down the sentence, the court noted Boortz fired his pistol directly at the victim, not in the air or at the ground, and that the offense would have constituted attempted second degree murder."
Boortz was accused of getting into a physical altercation with another man on May 11 at a convenience store. He returned to a vehicle to grab a weapon and fired several rounds at the other man, the release states.
The man's vehicle and foot were struck by bullets.
Agents identified Boortz using video footage. Authorities found Boortz was taken to a hospital on May 26 to be treated for a gunshot wound he got from another shooting, the release states.
"Boortz was previously convicted of multiple felony offenses, including aggravated assault, aggravated assault on a public servant, evading arrest with a vehicle and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon," the release reads. "He is, therefore, prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition per federal law."
He will remain in custody pending a transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility.
