(photo gellery)--When Evel Knievel was a teenager, he was among onlookers when the touring Joie Chitwood Thrill Show made a stop in his hometown of Butte, Mont. The car and motorcycle stunts featuring jumps and fire thrilled the teenager.

“The thing that impressed my 15-year-old mind the most was his intoxicating spirit and incredible showmanship,” Knievel said of Chitwood, who built his first race car while working at a Topeka welding shop in 1934. “It was then that I knew this business was for me.”
